RE "Apparently to get commercial green or blue LED, GaN is needed."

I don't think so. I believe I saw someone selling Green and blue-green LEDs based on ZnSe/ZnSSe.

"the goal of the semiconductor market is to go from indicator technology to illumination technology" With the blue LED that has become a possibility for the first time, though that's a very long way off except for specialized applications. There should be enough of them for Cree to flourish.

I agree with this whole-heartedly. Cree will flourish. They have some wonderful technology. With blue LEDs they have finally found a profitable outlet. (I've been following Cree for years -- that's what I mean by "finally".)

But the reason they will never be a Gorilla is that they do not have a lock on anything -- not blue LEDs, blue lasers, not even on SiC.
