MB:

Interesting that you should mention Fred's letter today. This morning, I called Fred to discuss what I see as a massive build-up of "bandwidth" at darned near every level. I wanted to compare notes with him on this topic. As usual, he was well ahead of me on it, and voiced an opinion with respect to the situation which was even more negative than my own. I haven't seen his latest issue yet, but delighted to hear that he is covering this topic.

The current bandwidth situation is insane. All kinds of companies are laying fiber and infrastructure on top of each other. And every 12 months, the bright lads in the labs discover yet another way to quadruple the signal they can pass down a single fiber conduit. Why are the involved companies doing this? Are they dumb? Haven't they done their homework on their competitors? They are doing it because the dough to do so is being supplied by Wall Street, and the stocks in this sector are are flying.

Sigh. You have to love it when they just keep on giving us more delightful future targets. (g)

Best, Earlie

MB. re: Hickey sees a global glut in fiber networking capacity.

Personally, I doubt if there can be enough fiber in our diet. Kind of like hard disks, company's will find away to use up all the capacity. <g>
