[Another fund manager likes DMIC...] Fund manager says go for the growth By David B. Wilkerson, CBS MarketWatch Last Update: 8:31 PM ET Feb 13, 2000 CHICAGO (CBS.MW) -- Looking for stock tips? Here are some: Fund managers -- and investors -- who insist on relying on so-called "value" stocks in today's high-tech environment are dead in the water, according to a Chicago financial expert. Bob Bacarella, president of Monetta Financial Services, made that comment during an interview with CBS.MarketWatch.com. He also discussed his favorite ideas in the technology sector, his take on smart Internet plays, and other topics. [snip] CBS.MW: Is there anything in the Internet area that you're bullish on at this point? Bacarella: You know, I think to play the Internet area properly, I think you should play a basket of stocks. I don't think there's one, by itself. I think they're still in a very early stage of advancement. In fact, to give you an idea of what we're doing here, we own approximately 200 stocks in our small-cap fund, and of that, about 40 percent are Internet-related. By Internet -- I shouldn't even be using the word Internet -- I mean they're technology stocks. Because we don't invest in a lot of the e-commerce-type stocks or the retail portion of it. We go more with the infrastructure stocks -- the widening of the bandwidth, the speed, you know, and all of that. But I mean, we have almost 100 names in this related telecom area that we feel are very attractive.... We like companies like Banyan Systems (BNYN: news, msgs), C-Core.Net (CCBL: news, msgs) is another one that we think is somewhat attractive. A more recent purchase is Cohu (COHU: news, msgs). We like that whole semiconductor area. Digital Microwave (DMIC: news, msgs) is another one. E-Tek Dynamics (ETEK: news, msgs) is one that we bought last year, and it's up over 400 percent for us.
