The McCaw bailout makes little sense to me. There are two reasons for him to do this, to get his feet wet in satellite telephony, and he is buying the spectrum. But is he really? The license is for the Iridium technology. Would he still have the rights to the spectrum for some other satellite telephone or data service?

The constellation is just too expensive to keep running. It degrades too quickly as satellites fail. Remember they relay signals from satellite to satellite so several satellites are involved to make a single call and they all have to be working and in the right spot in orbit. The present lack of call quality means that much must be done to keep the constellation working well. There is probably a reason Mot was charging Iridium so much for the command and control function.

Who would want to buy an Iridium phone considering the lack of call quality and the somewhat probable abandonment of the service?
