Amit, re Dell, Compaq, HP, IBM, and whether they might be good investments, for my own investing purposes, I feel I have enough exposure to their types of markets through my personal biggest holding, Intel. Other than that, right now, I want Internet infrastructure exposure, storage (getting to be close to the same thing, almost), and wireless and broadband. Oh, software too. Pure optical would be nice, too. Doesn't leave me any room for one of the aforementioned companies. But that's just me. We have to invest in what we know, have comfort with.

Sorry to not have much of an opinion. Well, Compaq is still beaten down and they do have a very broad range of PCs, servers and storage. They also do their own R&D (the stuff Ten pointed out, plus their no-down Tandem machines). I'd pick them, at least over Dell, but no rousing recommendation, still. Dell has little storage strategy, and as far as high end, like with Itanium, I think companies that can bring better overall (software, Internet) services, like IBM should do better there.
