Couple indicted on conspiracy charge -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- indicted conspiracy launder monetary instruments National Health Terra West Mosaic stock shell companies carri geer business Review-Journal A married couple were indicted Tuesday in Las Vegas on a federal conspiracy charge involving a plot to conceal more than $10 million in proceeds from the fraudulent sales of several companies. Peter and Rebecca Berney each face one count of conspiracy to launder monetary instruments. According to the indictment, the conspiracy began as early as January 1993. "It was a part of the conspiracy that the defendant Peter Berney and other co-conspirators would merge privately held corporations with virtually worthless shell corporations, which were tradable on the over-the-counter market, thereby creating freely tradable securities for companies," the indictment alleges. The document claims the defendants concealed the receipt and control of the proceeds from the fraudulent sales of the following shell companies: National Health, Terra West, Health and Wealth, and Mosaic. It also claims they used some of the proceeds of these sales "to fund the further fraudulent sales to the public of other worthless securities." At any given time, according to the indictment, Peter Berney had an inventory of between 35 and 50 shell corporations available for merging with privately held corporations. Co-conspirators included corrupt stock brokers, the document alleges. U.S. Magistrate Judge Roger Hunt issued a warrant Tuesday for Peter Berney's arrest. He issued a summons for Rebecca Berney, who is scheduled to appear Aug. 27 for an arraignment. Copyright Donrey Media Group Aug 18, 1999
