ORTL makes optical components used to upgrade cable TV networks for Internet and telephone service. ORTL's product line is different than that of JDSU, so I don't see much impact.

I could see LU spinning off their optical components business. This would create a large competitor for JDSU.

But my best guess is that they won't do it. This is based on my judgement of LU management. I think they want to keep control. Instead, they might create a tracking stock for the optical components business.

The best companies today don't want to be vertically integrated. JDSU doesn't want to compete with CSCO, CIEN, NT, etc. They want to supply them. CSCO doesn't want to build components. They know where their expertise lies.

IMHO, LU management thinks they can do everything, and do it well.
