Charles - It sounds like you've looked at Itanium fairly closely. I did a fairly extensive consulting gig with a well known database company just south of SFO last year, looking into the design aspects - I did not have the much coveted "red book" access to IA64 material but I spent a fair amount of time with folks from Intel who did - they were pretty open about what was working and what was not. Architecturally this is a big step for Intel and they are obviously struggling a little. It will eventually be a good product but I don't expect the waters to part near term.
