CSteadman:

Gilder may be mentioning Green's book, but there are
two survey papers in the mid 90s where Green was talking
about ``dumb networks,' the idea taken up by
Gilder afterwards. The fiber for the core network and
wireless for local delivery idea is also sketched out
well in the second of these papers (recall Gilder is
also recommending TGNT). So, the intellectual debt is
much larger than most of Gilder subscribers realize.
I do not necessarily mind having Gilder bringing
technical writing from the best minds to the general
public, but he is more a popularizer of ideas (with
good taste) than a true technological visionary.

Best regards,

Bernard Levy
