Paul, I think that Intel has told its OEMs that there will be no hard feelings if they fill the supply gap with AMD parts as long as the PCs using AMD parts are called "home PCs" and aren't pre-loaded with NT. Given that Intel has been rationing parts for half a year now, and this shortage may continue indefinitely (I know, I know, you think it will end Real Soon Now), the OEMs are in no position to annoy Intel - they could find their absolutely necessary Coppermines diverted elsewhere. So Compaq is offering an 850MHZ "home PC" that comes standard with 256 meg of RAM and can be optioned with 54 gig of disk space, a 10/100 network card, and a 21" monitor. Gee, that's perfect for Mom to keep track of her recipes, little Suzy to do her homework, and Dad to balance the checkbook. The hostages have guns held to their heads, and you know it. Let's see what happens if Intel ever manages to make enough high end parts that they are readily available, and the OEMs know they could get grey-market parts if push came to shove. Dan
