PARIS, Feb 10 (Reuters) - French telecoms equipment group Alcatel would not comment
on Thursday on market speculation it could be interested in buying Canada's Newbridge
Networks Corp (Toronto:NNC.TO - news) (NYSE:NN - news).

''We have no comment at all to make on this speculation and rumour,'' an Alcatel
spokesman said.

He would not confirm or deny that Alcatel was talking to Ottawa-based Newbridge.

Newbridge has been on takeover watch ever since announcing in November, as it posted weak second-quarter results, that it
had hired an investment banker and was open to offers.

Recent speculation suggests Alcatel leads the list of potential suitors, which is also rumoured to include Germany's Siemens
AG and Sweden's LM Ericsson .

North American firms named as possible buyers include network equipment suppliers Nortel Networks Corp (Toronto:NT.TO
- news), Cisco Systems Inc (NasdaqNM:CSCO - news) and Tellabs Inc (Toronto:TLAB.TO - news).
