Turner Broadcasting Selects Sonic Solutions for Web-Linked DVD
Sonic eDVD Enables Web-Based Interactive DVD Content
NOVATO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 10, 2000--Sonic Solutions (NASDAQ: SNIC - news) announced today that Turner Broadcasting Sales Inc. (TBSI), based in New York City, has selected Sonic's new eDVD(TM) technology to create DVD titles that bring together DVD and the World Wide Web. The advanced Internet connectivity that Sonic's DVD Creator production system provides with eDVD will make it possible for TBSI to seamlessly combine high-bandwidth DVD-Video content with up-to-the-minute web-based HTML content.

``Sonic eDVD will allow us to easily present to our clients a true representation of what the convergence of traditional television and interactive media such as the Web and Digital TV will look like,' said Chris Pizzurro, Vice-president of Multimedia Marketing for Corporate Marketing and Research at TBSI. ``With Sonic's DVD Creator and unique eDVD technology we can create interactive rich-media presentations that are used to communicate and sell new forms of programming that combine graphics, text, video, audio and web links to play back not only on set-top or PC-based DVD players, but also through a web browser. This will allow our customers to determine how they can best take advantage of these new communication vehicles to advance their business.'

Sonic eDVD gives DVD content producers the power to combine URL-based web links to DVD menu buttons with motion video during the DVD-Video authoring process. Multiple browser events can be triggered with a mouseover on the DVD menu, or by jumping to a new URL in any target window during playback on the PC. Adding an eDVD event is as simple as adding a chapter point or menu attribute inside Sonic DVD Creator. When the DVD-Video title is finalized, eDVD automatically generates Microsoft Internet Explorer-compliant JavaScript and HTML pages, giving DVD content authors instant web access.

``We are extremely pleased to see Turner Broadcasting Sales adopt Sonic`s eDVD technology to create web-linked DVD content,' said Giles Baker, Product Manager for DVD Creator at Sonic Solutions. ``As one of the world's leading media organizations, TBSI is ideally suited to both create and deploy eDVD titles using Sonic DVD Creator. Their combination of high-quality video and audio assets with up-to-the-second HTML content will redefine what is possible with DVD and the Internet.'

``Both DVD and the Internet have experienced phenomenal growth,' said Bob Doris, President and CEO of Sonic Solutions. ``Shipments of DVD-equipped PCs and set-top players are growing at an unprecedented rate, and now, as DVD becomes a high-bandwidth playback solution for PCs, these technologies will begin to merge. Sonic eDVD bridges the two technologies with a comprehensive solution that allows users to take advantage of both.'

About eDVD

Sonic eDVD links DVD-Video content to standard web pages using exclusive technology that combines DVD authoring with the creation of Microsoft© DirectShow(TM)-compliant JavaScript. DirectShow is an applications programming interface (API) that provides playback of multimedia assets from local files or Internet servers, enabling video and audio content compressed in DVD, audio-video interleaved (AVI), and WAV formats to be decoded on the PC. A DirectShow-compliant DVD player on the PC enables playback of DVDs within a standard web browser, such as Internet Explorer. Sonic eDVD gives DVD titles developers a quick and easy way to generate elaborate JavaScripts that can both control a DVD player via a browser and control the display of URLs and HTML events via DVD playback.
