Here are my comments regarding todays DELL annoucement and
you suggestion of AOL buyin phone companies for backbone.
1) It seems DELL net is a no go. They realized it now.
DELL is getting hit by low margin commodity business
and tried its own ISP stunt. But it went no where. So
what will you do if you are DELL CEO.
Join with the world's largest ISP and try to
leverage it. I think this also sends a signal to Microsoft.

2) Regarding AOL buying phone company.
I don't like the idea. It they want backbone they can rent it and use it. There are already big guys who spent tones of money to build back bone networks and they would love to have AOL use their facility. Did you notice MCI WORLDCOM CEO came and supported AOL-TWX merger the very next day? Why? Because he wants to make sure that AOL will keep continuing to use their backbone. Imagine the amount of traffice (IP packets) generated from AOL properties.
