Yes, that is exactly what I was trying to get across . . .

Basically these sorts of distributed denial of service attacks require a virus -- something like the Melissa virus that stays quiescent until a certain date/time when it will send HTTP GET requests to a list of web sites -- say yahoo on the first day, ebay on the second etc. Melissa infected a lot of machines, this virus could do the same. Now you have multiple hundreds or thousands of machines, relatively harmless machines at people's desks that will start making requests of the same server at once. You cannot filter for this because it means you have to shut the whole net off from your server because the machines are legit.

There's a gorilla in there somewhere . . . but it would require someone like Cisco to get involved to solve this -- it is a router company problem, and a bandwidth provider problem to solve.
