A Bond Trick you can play:

Buy the bond, short the stock. If the company goes bankrupt, as a bondholder, you get whatever remains.

This is even better with a convertible-- instant hedging.

This is even even better with a convertible with a reset. No matter which way it goes, you make money.

My guess is that the bond purchasers shorted the stock.
