Well, seeing as I sometimes write on medicine, I'll tell you that we are still fairly far away from effective cures, but mapping the genome is the first step. And playing with various inactivated or innocuous viruses as carriers of the good gene into a person's DNA etc...it ain't easy. It still seems a ways off but it's fascinating.
