Jay, it would be difficult for the average subway-riding Japanese office worker to "throw away his pride" and buy, on behest of his wife, 100 shares (the minimum) of Softbank -- The current minimum investment is more than most invest-to-save salarymen have in cash-like assets, and few of them would put it all into one stock. To become accessible, Softbank, and many other big names, would have to do stock splits. But, as has been mentioned on this board, maybe they prefer to have investors pour their savings into the mutual funds they own...
