TP, RE: Perhaps the quote services are getting wise to that 100 share at a strange price phenomina that has been hitting EMC lately. I still don't understand it but I think someone found a way to scam some bucks by manipulating the closing price.

My guess is that a small brokerage firm got a little too aggressive in screwing one of its customers.

Ordinarily, as long as a third market cross occurs within the day's range, it doesn't set off any alarm bells at the regulators. The low of the day for EMC was 113 3/4, however, so when that stock crossed at 113, it set off a couple of alarms. The firm that crossed the trade (i.e. screwed its customer) was called, and, in its most innocent voice, said, "Oh, that cross must be a mistake. Thanks so much for bringing it to our attention." The trade at 113 is cancelled, as it now shows on the tape, and the customer is notified that he is getting a better fill now. The customer thinks that his firm is great at getting him a fill, when in reality the firm is full of scumbags.
