Escorts Group plans ISP foray

New Delhi, Feb 10: The Escorts Group has decided to enter the Internet service provider (ISP) business. The Internet foray will be undertaken through the company's cellular arm Escotel Mobile Communications Ltd, a joint venture between Escorts Ltd and Hong Kong based First Pacific Company Ltd., a report in The Financial Times said. Escotel Mobile is one of the largest cellular service providers in the country and has operations in the states of Haryana, Kerala and Uttar Pradesh (West). The company now proposes to acquire additional licences from the Department of Telecom (DoT) for providing Internet services as an ISP, as well as render other value-added service (VAS) in the cellular mobile segment. In response to an Escotel letter in the last week of January, the DoT has supported the proposal provided that the company will not carry out any such activity without valid licences. Quoting sources, the financial daily said that the ISP foray may well be a nation-wide project and involve the investment of considerable resources on behalf of the company.
