Jack, Others seem to agree that SONET, except for voice, must go. I have read that SONET was a technology developed for voice. Nortel seems to be fully committed to development of a technology which eliminates the SONET layer. I do not know what Sycamore, Cienna or Corvis has that NT does not. NT has stated they will deliver Packet Core by the end of this year. The others are very concerned about Packet Core and that is why they have formed their association (ODI?) Packet Core will have a common control system in the optical layer and the switching layer which will allow bandwidth to be provisioned at points of congestion. To my knowledge, the others do not have this technology. Nortel has its network management software installed in most of the new high speed networks. That should give them an advantage as the technology evolves. Again, I think everybody understands the SONET layer must go
but it will be around for awhile.

Nortel seems to understand where the market and technology is headed. They usually get there ahead of the others. If John Roth sees a new trend, he wants to lead it, not follow.
