NDS Delivers Advanced Interactive TV System for QVC The Shopping Channel
LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 16, 2000--NDS Group plc (NASDAQ/EASDAQ:NNDS), a leader in providing business solutions to content owners and TV channels through sophisticated interactive TV technology, today announced that it is developing the interactive TV system for the UK's QVC The Shopping Channel. QVC UK, the UK's leading electronic retailer, and NDS, a subsidiary of News Corporation (NYSE:NWS - news), are working together to provide shoppers with the ability to order products in real time, simply by pressing a button on their TV remote controls. The system, which is being installed now, is due to be available to viewers later this year on Sky Digital.
Mark Suckle, Chief Executive Officer of QVC UK, commented: ``This new development in digital television technology will enable our customers to see an item, select it and buy it using their remote control while watching live QVC programs. It allows QVC to offer our customers a revolutionary new way to interact with a television program. This technology has important ramifications, not only for home shopping, but also for other broadcast content.'
NDS is providing a complete interactive system that incorporates an interactive product catalog and interactive transaction capabilities, which fully integrate with QVC's existing systems via NDS' open interface. This new platform leverages NDS' experience in delivering data to consumer's set-top boxes, of securing transactions and of producing end-to-end interactive services.
``The digital TV era is turning the set-top box into a new storefront. Content providers and retailers are seeking e-commerce solutions that are optimized for the TV environment and easy to deploy,' says Dr. Abe Peled, CEO and president of NDS. ``Our expertise and experience in delivering interactive TV solutions places us in a strong position to work with partners such as QVC and broadcasters like Sky Digital to drive and deliver the interactive future, today.'
Suckle added: ``We are delighted to be working with NDS, a world leader in digital technology, on this exciting new interactive television application. We will not only be able to offer our customers our full product range, but also the opportunity to purchase at the touch of a button from QVC, a name that they know and trust.'
