E bay is a wonderful site to somebody with time on his hands and a good idea. It probably is hand made. I've purchase several different LED flashlights, and the LED light output varies. The Tektite company appears to be making some of these to be sold by specialty companies. The best (but expensive)standard size flashlight size replacements is the 7 LED model sold at glow-bug.com. The microphoton key chain light discussed earlier also seems to be mass produced - tiny, very bright, you gotta get one of these.
I think the cost is what the market will bear . At this time it's only tech enthusiasts and the military . (apparently the SEALS wanted the 7 LED model)I see no reason why they should be so expensive, but to get the perceived light equal to a 2 D cell regular flashlight will probably take about 10 LED, so they won't sell for a couple of bucks. The differing color of the light makes them hard to directly compare (incandescent bulbs much more yellow tint)
Nichia LED - I suggest a letter writing campaign to Cree requesting that they make available to shareholders a small flashlight containing Cree LED. Whenever I show my photon microlight to somebody they are amazed, but then I have to admit the LED is not made by Cree.I've already sent my e-mail.
