RMBS, chasm

There has been a lot of discussion here lately concerning whether Rambus DRAM has crossed the chasm. But what form does the technology adoption life cycle have for a product like DRAM? Moore says that "every new generation of DRAM, for example, goes straight into the tornado." (Tornado, p. 146) To me, that implies that the DRAM market as a whole is in the tornado phase, and every new DRAM generation enters the tornado as a player at a small market share and then tries to increase its share to become the dominant player. This is not a market where a new product vendor first targets the early adopters and then "crosses the chasm" to switch to a bowling alley strategy, and then tries to initiate a tornado-like market adoption of the product. Because of the nature of the DRAM business, vendors cannot survive in anything short of a tornado market.

JMHO. Any comments?
