Sr K, RE: W2000 is not a consumer OS, so Niles' comment that this would help consumer sales -- Niles thinks it is significant that the pc will start getting more memory per box and consumers will want to make sure they have that for Windows 2000, so that's a benefit for DELL. -- is out of left field.

In fairness to Niles, this is more likely a reporter's misquote rather than Niles not understanding his company.

Here is Niles' one comment about Win 2000 in this morning's DELL note:

"We believe sales in servers and storage will be driven this year by the Windows 2000 launch as well as Dell's continued support of the Linux operating system."

This seems be a point that can be supported by logic.

Sr K -
You see it about as I do. I would have been happier if management had addressed this more directly, along with a plan (with some substance) to do better than that going forward. Instead I think they have set themselves up for expectations they will have a hard time meeting.

How people value this level of earnings, where about 1/4 is used to buy back shares offsetting employee and director stock options, is the guessing game and what will make the market.

Agreed, but I suspect that most people don't allow for this. Unfortunately, these costs are never included in earnings (as are the revenues from the sale of put contracts which offsets the cost of ESOs).

TTFN,
