Michael - Re: "Is this an area Intel could look into in order to expand their pie?"

Intel has already DONE THAT !

Intel OWNs 4 or 5% of Broadcom - as an early investor - an investment currently worth >$1.7 BILLION (that is a B - not an M !).

Further, Intel purchased Level One Communications which in some way has competing products with some of those produced by Broadcom.

Michael, Re BRCM, PMCS and several others. Strange though, I wouldn't have thought companies producing IC's of that type would be given such a high valuation.

To add to what Paul said: What has happened is, after people found out about this Internet thing, and rushed out to buy Cisco and NT stock, Lucent when it was hot, and a few other infrastructure equip. companies like Alcatel and Ciena, they said 'what else is there in support of the Internet?' (and cell phones, DSL, set tops, cable modem, etc.). Well, there are the chips that go in the Cisco equipment, or in the cell phones, DSL modems, set top boxes, cable modems, and in the optical (fiber optic) connected equipment, called switches, etc.

So, BRCM, PMCS, VTSS, Triquint, Qualcomm, JDS Uniphase, AMCC and a few other stocks all went crazy.

This is also why Intel is spending a lot of money themselves to get into the chips that support the Internet and the other communications media that are growing so fast. Intel has been calling for >50% growth for their newly purchased companies/products. That's faster than their traditional chips business.

Michael, if I may add some more info....Intel is working in this area. Perhaps you've heard of Intel's Internet Exchange(tm) Architecture. If not, look here: level1.com

The IXA ecosystem is one of the areas I look to invest in with the Intel Communications Fund which you can learn about here:
developer.intel.com
