CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 27, 2000-- The new MegaVerter(TM)Line will be installed at FuelCell Energy's Danbury, CT facility SatCon Technology Corporation(R) (Nasdaq NM:SATC), a leader in power and energy management products, today announced that it has introduced a new line of power inverters aimed at the higher power commercial and industrial range of fuel cell power generation systems. SatCon has entered into a collaborative agreement under which it will install and demonstrate its high efficiency, modular, interleaved inverter in a fuel cell power generation system with FuelCell Energy Inc., (Amex: FCL). The new SatCon MegaVerter(TM) power inverter will be combined with other SatCon power and energy management products including SatCon's MicroGrid(TM) fuel cell controller and software. The complete power conversion system will be installed on the grid-connected 250 kW Direct FuelCell(TM) power plant that is currently powering FuelCell Energy's facility in Danbury, CT. The development of SatCon's MegaVerter(TM) modular power inverter was partially funded under the Power Electronics Building Blocks program with the Office of Naval Research. These units are highly efficient, compact and modular making them complimentary to FuelCell Energy's Direct FuelCell technology. The MegaVerter(TM) supplied to FuelCell Energy will include an option to rapidly respond to short transient loads introduced into the system. The MegaVerter(TM) power inverters will be manufactured at SatCon's Advanced Fuel Cell Power Products Division in Marlborough, MA. "We believe that the commercial and industrial marketplace offers significant opportunities for SatCon's power inverter product line," said David Eisenhaure, SatCon President and Chief Executive Officer. "FuelCell Energy has a unique product that can provide alternative energy generation for larger commercial and industrial applications. Having our new MegaVerter(TM) modular power inverter installed as part of our overall power conversion system with FuelCell Energy's 250 kW Direct FuelCell(TM) power plant at their facility allows this product to demonstrate its advantages to industrial users that require clean, reliable and affordable power. The combination of FuelCell Energy's Direct FuelCell(TM) power plant and SatCon's high-efficiency MegaVerter(TM) modular power inverters we believe is a natural fit." Fuel cells generate electricity using a chemical reaction. In addition to being environmentally clean, these systems can be operated independent from the utility grid to provide distributed or on-site power. The system generates DC electricity, which is then converted to computer quality AC power through a power inverter. To offset peak power requirements and start up, energy storage systems are installed into the overall power generation system. A controller with embedded software manages the distribution of power between the fuel cell, energy storage and the end user. In this collaboration, FuelCell Energy will provide its Direct FuelCell(TM) power plant and SatCon will supply its fuel cell power conversion system which includes a MegaVerter(TM) power inverter, a MicroGrid(TM) fuel cell controller and software, and other SatCon power and energy management products.
