Hmmm. As I recall, even Goldwater got a higher % of the vote than Bush did in 1992. Bush commanded the resources of a sitting prez and Goldwater ran against an incumbent at his height and a national tide of post-assassination emotion.

To me, that's prima facie evidence of failure. You'd have to go back to Taft to see the same magnitude of debacle, of rejection. And let's remember that Taft had a much larger figure to deal with, a legend, Teddy Roosevelt, not some crank and an unknown governor of the most backward state.
