Report from CTIA Wireless 2000.

I was at the CTIA's Wireless 2000 show in New Orleans and droppped by the Ultralife booth several times during the three days I was there. On display were two products not seen at the annual meeting. These were aftermarket battery packs for the Nokia 5100/6100/7100 series of phones. The batteries are UB750 750mah and UB2300 2300mah. The did a demo in which they invited you to pickup and hold the 900mah NiMH battery pack they said came standard with the Nokia phone and hold their battery in your other hand. The UB750 is very much thinner and lighter than
the 900mah NiMH and even the UB2300 was lighter than the standard battery even though it holds 2.56 times as much energy. Suggested retail prices were $80 and $120 for the two models. Electrofuel was showing a 2100mah battery for the Nokia 6100 with a price of $99.95. Despite the fact that they were showing and demoing these batteries at the show and quoting prices, they said they would not do an announcement for at least another two months in line with ULBI's policy not to announce until they are shipping. They told me that they would sell these after market batteries under their own name for at least the first year rather than do a private label deal, at least initially. They are still working on OEM deals for the cells but won't announce until the customers' product ships. Also anything happening with the automotive telematics market is still a few months off because the prospects have to evaluate the second batch of samples which are being modified to their requested specifications.

They were at the show to meet and talk to the cell phone accessory retailers at the show about their after market products as well as to the OEM's about their cells. Naturally they didn't tell me if any deals were struck but at least they had more to show and promise at this years show than they had at last years.

I thought the aftermarket batteries looked well made and were attractively packaged. The retail blister packs had well printed cards with much information and performance tables showing standby and talk time printed on the back. They should look attractive hanging on the retailers' wall hook.
