Of course there is a choice. Use your ATM card. It won't give you any money back, but it will assure you don't go overboard buying those things you didn't know you needed until you saw them on sale at Costco. :-)

It always annoyed me that they only took Discover, so I've always used a check or ATM card anyway. I assume Costco has used its clout to get a special deal with AMEX, which ordinarily is the most expensive card for retailers to accept.

Dear Z: I am told the AMEX card gives same rebate as Discover without the step up basis and the card is free to COST members. Its just that when I was in business I carried the AMEX card and always felt they were a little snooty compared to the others. Now that I am retired will just feel like I am working again. haha. Why not complain, maybe if we all did they would change. But, I just went to COST today and on the checkout they reminded me they would not be taking my Discover card soon. JDN
