j.g....real problem on product changeover is.....

dell "bet" as you aptly put it on a new technology. in a bto/jit model this is considered a disaster waiting to happen, as it has not been proven. even the slightest fault in product quality or delivery magnifies itself as it proceeds upstream to the user. remember that many components or subassemblies must fall in place in a seamless fashion to the user/assembler. use the auto industry as a graphic example...imagine if ford tried to make a major design change on the fly!!! this is akin to what dell attempted....not sure what management was thinking about an outright gamble that wreaked havoc....
