Ausdauer, I loved your post!

Twoallbeefpattiesspecialsaucelettucecheesepicklesonionsonasesameseedbun may soon appear in the dictionary as the longest English language word in common usage :-)

As an aside, I find it most interesting that SNDK has branched off CF to provide other forms of flash for retail users. Don't die with shock, but it wouldn't surprise me if SNDK started making Sony gumsticks under license.

Classic marketing tells us that as long as we can confuse retail buyers, there will be profits to be made. And that once things settle down, everyone is stuck with mini-margins on a "commodity". So bring on the new standards and the competitors and confusion!

Aus:

FWIW.
For the last two weeks I have been attempting to drag information from 5 individuals that attended the C.E.S. in Las Vegas. They run our most prestigious Audio/Video retail outlet in this area. The manager being married to one of my nieces and the owner being a "friend".

The store is SONY saturated. Cameras,Tv's,etc. These gentlemen are devout SONY retailers. For the last two years I have been promoting CF and jumping up and down on the soapbox about SanDisk and it's product. I was informed that SONY brought about Compact Flash in '98. Imagine my surprise!! (rotf)
They more or less shrugged off my attempts to enlighten their narrow view.

Well, C.E.S. changed their tune. The truth came out. There were three impressive and rather large booths/displays at the show. Sony/SanDisk/Panasonic, not necessarily in that order of size. The statement I was looking for was "SanDisk was everywhere, they are into everything". The owner made the remark that he didn't realize that CF was so "intense" and so "large","this technology will be around for along time with so many innovations grabbing it's coattails it's frightening".

Sony is dedicating an entire line of products based around the CF technology.
