Mohan, i believe there's a material difference aside from the VIX 50-dma slope: '98 was a crisis that began with an exogenous shock. IF we get another crisis, it will be home-made so to speak. i happen to think that the Fed's liquidity splurge has laid the foundation for an extreme shake-out. it may or may not have started already. be that as it may, by opening the spigot wide without justification, the Fed has blunted this instrument should a crisis actually occur.
the Q4 '99 printathon can hardly be topped, unless they want to provoke a dumping of dollar assets by foreigners (which may happen anyway).
