My modem is extremely loud and the button to turn down modem volume is grayed out in dial up networking properties

Wilson,

I used to have the same problem with my Dell and never did find an answer. Sorry, but I'm sure someone will come along with an answer. Have you looked under modem in control panel?

i think tc has put you on the right path...

control panel, modem, general, properties, speaker volume.

Only a month late but just in case you ever have problems with loud modem problems again and don't want to remove the speaker I just ran across a possible solution.

To turn off the modem sounds (when the slider bar doesn't work):

Right click "My Computer", choose Properties/Device Manager, click the (+) sign by Modems, highlight your modem, select Properties/Connection/Advanced. Type "M0" (that's a ZERO) in the extra settings box.
