That is a false assumption. I imagine you'd be right if you are advertising a free cancer cure, but overcoming an entrenched franchise like Amazon's is not solely a matter of advertising and marketing.

Then there is the matter of service. An advertising campaign can be slick, cool, memorable, and make a compelling sales proposition, but there had better be the stuff to back it up. No one comes near Amazon in customer satisfaction.

The high valuations of the internet companies have created a huge incentive to invest in new companies, resulting in the staggering venture capital funding of late. This investment allows these new companies to spend freely to attempt to gain market position, forcing the existing players to spend to match.

Exactly! That's the link that everyone seems to miss. Amazon's valuation is going to doom its business. Especially because the public doesn't even care if Amazon makes money. There's no barrier to competition if you don't even have to turn a profit.
