Future Stock

[Ciena] is already the leader in "dense wave division multiplexing," the technology that splits beams of light traveling down a fiber-optic line into separate frequencies so the line can transmit more information. In March 1999 Ciena spent $463 million to acquire Lightera, a company that makes optical switches, which are "God's next gift to mankind," as Jeff Wrona, manager of the PBHG Technology & Communications fund, puts it. "The Holy Grail in telecom equipment is an all-optical network. And the Lightera acquisition gives Ciena the optical switches that will help direct Internet traffic when that happens."

Best of luck.
