Burgers Recalled Due to Bacteria

Updated 2:49 PM ET March 4, 2000
HOUSTON (AP) - A food distributor issued a recall Saturday for its 6.5-ounce double cheeseburgers after tests found a bacteria that can cause fatal infections in children and the elderly, a federal official said.
No illnesses have been reported in connection with the frozen burgers produced by Regal Food Service of Houston, said Ruth Welch, a spokeswoman for the Food and Drug Administration.

The cheeseburgers were distributed to convenience stores, truck stops and vending machines in Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Florida, Mississippi, Arkansas and Alabama, Welch said.

They were packaged in clear plastic containers and marked with a four-digit code. All codes were recalled. (cont)
