James, you ask: What if the technologies were the same (and not better?) If the technologies were equally efficient and offered at the same cost, there would be no change in the status quo as far as market share is concerned. I am not familiar with what Cienna is doing in optical switching but I believe both companies and Lucent are working on products with intelligence at the optical layer. The competitive difference at this time seems to be that Cienna does not offer OC-192.
