bearshark: I am a believer in freedom of speech. However, for example one would not approve of someone coming into a house of god (church, temple, etc.) during services and berate a member out loud or expound negative dialog which would disrupt the service. That exercise of freedom of speech would be deemed unacceptable. In addition, we all abide by certain censorship requirements when in court. Some of these are voluntary and some are not voluntary situations where free speech gives up some ground temporally as a necessary function of civility. Let those that want to ridicule and belittle others as a vehicle to uplift their own self-esteem, congregate unto themselves. Let them leave those that would find their behavior repulsive free from such repugnant behavior. This thread was founded to promote discussion in a cordial and respectful manner. Albeit I am no longer the host, nor are the guidelines still posted. However, if the regulars of this thread allow ridicule, belittling and other forms of disparagement to infiltrate this thread it will no longer be one I will choose to contribute too or read. Think of it as a clubhouse where standards are expected. Those that choose not to honor those standards are free in this society or this message board in particular, to start their own thread or find one of the thousands of other threads on SI, that would better fit their behavior or lack of. There is no real loss of freedom of speech by finding and participating on the proper thread, but there is a major gain in civility! I will not continue to address this subject. The lack of participation in policing this thread by the regular contributors and or lurkers is the reason I stopped hosting this thread in the first place. The same may well be the reason I stop contributing. The regular contributors and lurkers most likely would not like to see this thread degenerate. However, speaking up after the degeneration takes place, will likely be to late. Regards, LG
