Connecticut-Based Group: China Arrests Archbishop
BEIJING (Reuters) - Chinese authorities have arrested an archbishop of the underground Roman Catholic Church as part of an escalating campaign to stamp out allegiance to the Pope, the Connecticut-based Cardinal Kung Foundation said Monday.

Yang Shudao, 81, archbishop of the Fuzhou archdiocese in the eastern province of Fujian, was arrested last week and his whereabouts were unknown, the foundation said in a statement.

Chinese officials said they were unaware of the report.

The statement said that since 1955 Yang has served around 30 years in jail and been arrested on numerous occasions for refusing to denounce the Pope and cooperate with the state-backed Catholic Patriotic Association.

Freedom of religion is enshrined in the Chinese constitution, but Beijing permits worship only at state approved ``patriotic' churches, temples or mosques.
