AMD surprised me with this early launch, this wasn't supposed to happen until the 14th.
Luckily I ran a few benchmarks. I am working on this Linux box comparison
(won't be here soon, Linux and I don't get along too well).
To be more precise: I hope to give you a PIII-800 vs Athlon 800/850 vs Alpha DS 10 (21264-466 MHz) comparison.
I thought it would be refreshing.

Anyway here are the benchmarks. The benchmark system used
the usual Western Digital 18 GB 7200 rpm ATA-66, 128 SDRAM
PC 100 Cas2. The videocard was the Guillemot 3D Prophet SDR, The Athlon used a GIGAByte 7IX, de PIII-800 a
SuperMicro i820.

Benchmark Athlon 800 Athlon 850 PIII-800
FPU Mark 4270 4620 4250
CPU Mark 70.2 72.5 71.6
Winstone 29.9 30.8 31.5
Content Creation 31.5 30.8 29.6
Povray Skyvase 30s 28s 33s
Dagoth More ZG 55.5 59.5 50.1
640x480x16
bit color

Forget the synthetic benchmarks like CPU 3D Mark 2000 and
Winbench 2000. It is a neck-and-neck race, but it clear
that Athlon has a small advantage. The PIII-800 prevails
only in Winstone. The Athlon 800 and 850 give the PIII-800
a firm beating in the polygon intensive Dagoth More
Zoological Garden. That confirms our Athlon 800 review.

I sincerely hope Intel shows us something good on the IDF.
They need something better than the coppermine, because you
can bet that the Thunderbird will kick ass! If you got a
good question for me, that you want me to ask those capable
intel engineers (no marketing crap for me ; ), post your
question here. Heavy tech questions are welcome on the technical forum.
