BB, may be I was to naive in 1987 and to young in 1973 <GG> but I do not think that such gross manipulation of small groups of stocks were done at that time.

Yes I heard the stories of the Nifty Fifty, but on a valuation to GDP or other yardsticks teh market was not so overvalued as it is now, more specifically the NAZ 100.

Would admit I am not familiar with the nifty fifty stocks, but if I recall then as today there were more mutual funds than common stocks.( I think NASDQ was not active then)
