Separated from the hard disk drive business (symb HDD)as of July 1999. DSS designs, develops, manufactures, licenses and markets DLT tape drives, DLT tape media cartridges and tape libraries that are used to back-up large amounts of data stored on network servers.The business is the world's leading maker of tape drives (65% of sales)used for storage and backup on network servers. Digital Linear Tape, or DLT tape, is the DLT & Storage Systems group's half-inch tape technology that is the de facto industry standard for data back-up in the mid- range network server market, which includes network servers priced between $10,000 and $500,000.
