Cottonmouths are air breathers. Semi-aquatic snakes. They seldom hide underwater and then not for very long.

There's a beautiful scene of the Mifune character "tickling" fish from a stream in Seven Samurai.

Really they are reaching for catfish but you never know what's in the holes. It's for the adventurous sorts. They do get some big cats though. I know a guy who has brought home some 30 pounders from small rivers where no one has caught anything over 5 pounds on rod and reel.
