Having the underlying stock in your account does not protect anything if you are selling naked puts.

Precisely. Selling a put "protects" you only if you are short the stock. And even if you are short and want "protection", perhaps you should consider buying calls.

I used the quotes around protection because this is not the way I use options - even though it's a standard presentation.
