******** A Message from Leavenworth ********

buenas tardes amigos y amigas (dudes),

i talked to kidd thursday night. he said he is receiving lots of books, letters and notices of magazine subscriptions from people who say they are friends of his father.

he said, "dad. you and your friends have made my week."

it is the first time i've heard happiness in his voice in 3 or 4 years. he said the first book he received was "The Power of One" and he was about half way through it. he was loving every page. he mentioned the title of several others that sounded like great books. i said, "i'd like to read some of those too; be sure to bring them with you when you get out." his reply gave me a little wake-up call and reminded me why i love him so much. he said, "dad, most of these people in here are serving life sentences. i can't walk out of here taking books away."

D'oh... it must be hard having homer simpson for a dad <G>

books, magazines and letters are treasures. to a person in prison with no income, no bookstore, and no hope, surrounded by constant reminders of the worst life has to offer, they are more than treasures. they are a walk in the woods, a temporary escape from the constant echoing din of cold, hard souls slamming shut, a breath of fresh ocean breeze, a talk with a friend or lover, a catharsis.

something else he said, that made me laugh and know that he's feeling better... " dad, i only have about 8 months to go until i get out of here. most of these magazine subscriptions are for a year. i'm going to have to ask if i can stay a little longer until they run out."

dudes... you have reached out and touched someone's heart. you've filled an empty space. you have brought joy into the world where there was pain and sorrow.

i just thought you'd like to know.

gracias por el dulce,

-polvie
