NZ Telecom: Lucent Technologies To Build
CDMA Network

WELLINGTON -- Telecom Corp. of New Zealand (NZT) Tuesday named
Lucent Technologies to build a mobile phone network based on the code
division multiple access (CDMA) standard in New Zealand.

In a statement, Telecom said its 81.4%-owned Australian unit AAPT Ltd.
(A.AAP) also is selecting Lucent as supplier of CDMA in Australia.

Telecom announced in August it would invest around NZ$200 million in the
CDMA technology which will be ready for commercial launch in 2001. It
said AAPT will be spending A$450 million to A$500 million on its network.

Both Telecom and AAPT selected Lucent after independent evaluations.

Telecom Chief Executive Theresa Gattung said by using the same network
supplier, Telecom and AAPT have been able to derive financial savings
worth tens of millions of dollars.

"Both Telecom and AAPT are getting a great deal more bang for their
buck," she said in a statement.

The two companies will be collaborating on the development of the project
and use of resources, she said.

The CDMA standard is compatible with third generation wireless networks
which will allow high-speed data and multimedia communications via cellular
handsets.

The new network provides the same coverage as Telecom's existing analog
network, and faster data transmission rates will be available at or shortly
after launch.
