Let's say I have the $100,000 AMZN position with $50,000 equity. As you say, with the old rule my DT buying power is $50,000. The thing I need to know first is if I sell the AMZN and don't get involved in the "buying it back" issue, does my DT buying power increase for that day, or is it still limited to $50,000?

Since intraday calculations of rule 2520 and Reg T are not allowed, you're buying power is not altered by selling AMZN intraday. You're buying power will be revised at the next calculation of rule 2520---after the close on the day you sold your AMZN. But you have to admit that a 4x maintenance equity excess allows a LOT of buying power.
