OPTX : NETOPTIX CORP (NASDAQ) All Headlines Corning to buy NetOptix in $2 bln stock deal CORNING, N.Y., Feb 14 (Reuters) - Fiber optics company Corning Inc. (NYSE: GLW) will buy NetOptix Corp. (NASDAQ: OPTX), which makes a key component in gear that raises the capacity of fiber optic networks, for $2 billion in stock to boost its position in the networking equipment market, the companies said on Monday. Corning, the original developer of fiber optics telecommunications technology, also said it had formed an equity venture with Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. . The venture, Samsung Corning Micro-Electronics, will make components for optical network capacity-boosting gear called dense wavelength division multiplexers. Corning said in a statement it will swap 0.9 Corning share for each NetOptix share. The terms value NetOptix at about $149.175 per share, based on Corning's closing stock price on Friday, NetOptix said in a statement. Corning shares closed at 165-9/16 on Friday on the New York Stock Exchange, and NetOptix ended at 136 on Nasdaq. Corning said it expects the deal to lower its earnings slightly this year but increase them beginning in 2001. After the deal closes, Corning said NetOptix will supply the thin film filters it makes to the Samsung Corning Micro-Electronics venture. All
