SAN DIEGO - February 16, 2000 - QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced inauguration of the Company?s Wireless Internet Launchpad? suite, targeted at enabling a broad range of new terminal products, applications and Internet services, including advanced multimedia, connectivity, position location, user interface and removable storage functionality. QUALCOMM plans to integrate these capabilities as tightly as possible into the Company?s CDMA chipset and system software solutions to achieve the best cost-performance as well as the earliest time-to-market for manufacturers designing new classes of e-commerce-, safety-, convenience- and entertainment-enhanced mobile handsets.

QUALCOMM?s Wireless Internet Launchpad suite includes highly integrated chipset functions, system software and other add-on software that will offer manufacturers advanced Internet functionality and multimedia features while eliminating the need for additional components. The Wireless Internet Launchpad suite is divided into five functional categories:
Multimedia
Qsynth? software for 16-polyphony, 128-instrument general Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) music generator
Compact Media Extension (CMX?) software for MIDI, text and graphics-based multimedia applications
Qtunes? audio decoders, including support for Moving Pictures Expert Group (MPEG) Layer-3 (MP3), enabling high-quality music reproduction * Support for wireless VoIP-based group communications
QTV? MPEG-4 streaming video decoder to enable viewing of full-motion video
Still image decoders for display of graphic and still-video images
Connectivity
Bluetooth for wireless data and audio transfer between handset and various peripherals and data devices
Universal Serial Bus (USB) for faster data transfers between wireless phones and other data devices
PureVoice Mail? for sending voice email attachments to desktop computers and other devices
Internet Protocol (IP) stack support and Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) browser interface for full Internet connectivity
Position Location
gpsOne? and SnapTrack? wireless-assisted Global Positioning System (GPS) technology, offering the highest possible accuracy and availability, both indoors and outdoors, to enable a new class of mobile, position-dependent applications and services, such as E-911, yellow pages, zone- based billing, navigation, local weather and traffic information, asset tracking and more
User Interface
PureVoice? speaker-dependent and speaker-independent Voice Recognition (VR) with digit dialing, enabling voice commands for dialing and activation of phone functions and features
PureVoice Recorder? for voice memo and answering machine capabilities
PureVoice Audio AGC? (Automatic Gain Control) for better call intelligibility, especially under noisy conditions
Subscriber Identity Module/Removable Universal Identity Module (SIM/RUIM) card interface
Compatibility with third-party PDA operating systems
Digital CMOS Image (DCI) sensor for image capture
Color Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) driver to allow viewing of both still and moving images in full color
Storage
Multimedia Card (MMC) interface, enabling addition of high-capacity removable memory for storage of data such as electronic maps, music and images, as well as for transfer of data to and from PCs and consumer devices * Secure Digital (SD) Card interface, supporting implementation of secure e-commerce services and copyright protection. The SD interface is backward compatible with MMC Cards
These technologies and applications are either available or planned for integration into various upcoming chipset and system software releases from QUALCOMM. A specific set of Wireless Internet Launchpad features will be incorporated selectively into each chipset and software product, closely matching the specific functionality and cost-target objectives agreed upon in joint product planning with manufacturers and wireless service operators worldwide. Wireless Internet Launchpad capabilities will continue to evolve with future product definition.
Today, the first generation of microbrowser-enabled mobile personal information management devices are beginning to appear in the marketplace.
