Your memory is good. From what I remember from a Buffet article late last year the dow was @ 870ish in 1981 and has experienced a 15% annual growth with the last 5 years being healthier.

However the previous 17 years from 64 to 81 the Dow gained less than a point for a zero annual return (but there was a 4.5% dividend rate. During this period the economy was growing with GDP and corporate profits increasing about fivefold.

The difference was inflation and interest rates. Both were rising in the early years (hey isn't Alan raising rates now <gg>??).

Just some tidbits in my memory. It was from a philly newspaper.
